Sept 23rd
We will get home this afternoon and we are not sure if we are happy about it or not. There is lots to do there and when we are on the road there is nothing we can do about it so it is much more relaxing. We got up and took a walk around the “City of Rocks” in the early morning light – early for us was about 8am. The sky had cleared up from the low clouds of yesterday and the rocks looked even more inviting. We flushed out a great horned owl from a tree among the rocks – twice! First he flew around a few rocks and into another tree and then, when we got there, from that tree back to the first one. Those birds are amazing – so big and so quiet – no sound in flight. We see great horned owls around our house in the Tortolita Mountains and are always impressed.
The trip was uneventful. The new fan clutch kept us cool as the temps climbed into the low 90’s but it was on all the time. This needs work and hopefully I can get it done before our next trip.
Keep an eye on this blog because I will be adding some details like a map and some statistics.
Very cool Armand! Thanks for sharing your trip. Some of the photos you took at Graceland and the Elvis Auto Museum look almost identical to ones that I took last year when Kathy and I were there. We were in a rental car so we stayed at the Heartbreak Hotel, right next to the campground. Kathy, being a huge Elvis fan, wanted to go to Tupelo next, then on to Little Rock.
When we were in Silver City in July, we heard about “City of Rocks” but didn’t get a chance to g down there. Next time, we definitely will. It looks like a beautiful place.

Hi Carl,
I am glad that you enjoyed the blog. I intend to keep it up and try to make it better by getting Carol to write too. My motivation is to be able to help people for a fee but right now I am in learning mode so just a hobby. Dan told me that you and Kathy had been there on your way through. You should try it in the GMC – we had a great time, the best vacation of our lives. The Heartbreak Hotel looked pretty nice too though. We did a cross country trip in our van in 2005 and made it to Tupelo. If you are an Elvis fan you have to go there.
Regarding the City of Rocks, the first thing I thought of once we figured out how much we liked it was having a rally there. Then reality clicked in and we figured out then even though they say they have 50 or so developed camp sites most of them are for tents. There are only 10 RV sites and they don’t have dump facilities of any kind. So no rallys but some small group things might be nice.
